Workers caught in terrible traps, encouraged to choose the wrong enemies.

Almost in spite of myself, I like this guy, and I think I need to publish this corrective to my recent send-up. Haggard eventually shifted his allegiances, but one senses that he himself hadn’t really changed all that much:

This is America. We’re proud. We’re not afraid of a bunch of terrorists. But this government is all about terror alerts and scaring us at airports. We’re changing the Constitution out of fear. We spend all our time looking up each other’s dresses. Fear’s the only issue the Republican Party has.

Here’s Willie Nelson and an older Merle Haggard singing Townes Van Zandt’s “Pancho and Lefty.” I love these contradictions and ambiguities.
