Winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan, Ch. 3,234

Afghanistan and called it peace.jpg

More Afghan civilians murdered by one of their liberators.

Whether it’s a wedding party or just prey, the bodies pile up, and the liberators are always sorry about that.

Meanwhile, the current mayor of Kabul, Hamid Karzai, has decreed that women shall henceforward be second-class citizens. Remember, this is our guy. 158 Canadians died to support him.

There are those who continue to defend this doomed, impossible mission. I can understand the initial optimism—after all, who could argue that the Taliban’s way of governance is better than a Western-style one?—but it’s high time to inject a dose of reality, not to mention intellectual honesty, into the discussion.

The Afghan people are between the proverbial rock and a hard place, they’re suffering grievously, and there’s no end in sight. With the best will in the world, the intervenors have lost. Time to admit it, get out and and move on.
