Beating a small child with a riding crop and sending her to hospital is fine, according to a Canadian judge—just so long as the assailant is quoting the Bible as he brutalizes her.
By so ruling, the judge virtually nullified a 2004 judgement of the Supreme Court of Canada, which was clear on the subject: “Corporal punishment using objects, such as rulers or belts, is physically and emotionally harmful.” The judge in question apparently preferred to uphold Divine law.
