Alternate title: “Silmarillion character gets bloggy with it.”

Hello, I’m Mandos. You’re all probably familiar with me anyway, but I thought I’d introduce myself the same. After holding out for a while due to real-life commitments, I finally accepted the good Doctor’s invitation to join the club here. But my real-life commitments are just the same or worse, so don’t count on me for any great regularity!

For those who don’t know me as well, I am a Vala from Tolkien’s Silmarillion. Specifically the Vala of Doom, or as I like to call it, the Doomwallah. My day job is to host the souls of the Elves stuck around in the eternal waiting room that are my Halls of Awaiting, advising Manwë, the King of the Valar in Arda, being moved to tears by particularly talented singing Elf women, and just generally lolling about the Blessed Realm and being all Doomy.

I suppose these days everyone has a mission statement, and here’s an excerpt from what I think is mine:

Tears unnumbered ye shall shed; and the Valar will fence Valinor against you, and shut you out, so that not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains. On the House of Feanor the wrath of the Valar lieth from theWest unto the uttermost East, and upon all that will follow them it shall be laid also. Their Oath shall drive them, and yet betray them, and ever snatch away the very treasures that they have sworn to pursue. To evil end shall all things turn that they begin well; and by treason of kin unto kin, and the fear of treason, shall this come to pass. The Dispossessed shall they be for ever.

Ye have spilled the blood of your kindred unrighteously and have stained the land of Aman. For blood ye shall render blood, and beyond Aman ye shall dwell in Death’s shadow. For though Eru appointed to you to die not in Ea, and no sickness may assail you, yet slain ye may be, and slain ye shall be: by weapon and by torment and by grief; and your houseless spirits shall come then to Mandos. There long shall ye abide and yearn for your bodies, and find little pity though all whom ye have slain should entreat for you. And those that endure in Middle-earth and come not to Mandos shall grow weary of the world as with a great burden, and shall wane, and become as shadows of regret before the younger race that cometh after. The Valar have spoken.

Or something like that.

Aside from that… I’ve been on the blogosphere before there even was a blogosphere, and have been blogger and coblogger at a number of places, including my own defunct-but-still-up “Politblogo”. I sort of ran out of steam at some point, though, because I prefer the give and take of forum life, but the blogosphere is where the action is. (Actually it’s Twitter etc. now, but whatever. Late adopter, I.)

For those wondering, I still blog at That Other Place, and intend to continue to do so.

Other things about me? Well, yes, I am a contrarian, because saying something when I actually agree is too much effort for too little value. I am an anti-colonialist, but not Kenyan—-too much of the Flame Imperishable in me, alas. I am a Bad Environmentalist, to some extent—-no, I am not a global warming denier, but I am not particularly anti-nuke nor really anti-GMO either. I believe that there is an ideology called economism that economists seem to practice. (The worst sect of which I call Freakonomicism, despite having never read “Freakonomics” and having no plans to do so.)

I’ve come to believe that one sort of groupthink is the idea that groupthink is particularly pernicious, and that this sort of groupthink is an example of the groupthink that is pernicious. However, everyone who agrees with me on this is potentially participating in groupthink with me. Therefore, you should disagree with me, but you risk also participating in an even more pernicious form of groupthink. Or something like that.

So, if you came to the end of this, I would like to leave you with a thought. I titled this post “maiden post” in the sense of “maiden voyage”, that is, the ship is no longer a “maiden” because it has been “voyaged” (by the manly sailors thereon, I presume). But it is this post that is being posted. So if you have come to the end of this post, is it this post that is not a maiden? Or am I no longer a posting “maiden”? Or is this blog no longer “maiden”, relative to my posting?

These are issues.
