Canada to export more poison?

| Disqus Comments

The merchants of death in the Canadian asbestos industry are at it again.

A consortium is looking for a loan from the Quebec government to increase production of this poison, and there’s every reason to believe that the loan will be forthcoming. The aim of the consortium is to expand production 10-fold, to 225,000 tonnes annually, for export to the Third World.

We must assume that the Harper government, which helped to sabotage an international proposal to add asbestos to a watchlist of toxic substances in 2008, is on-side—with their Liberal coalition partner. Who cares if brown people die of mesothelioma? They don’t matter, and they have no votes. Besides, there’s money to be made.

No word as yet from former human rights activist Michael Ignatieff. No surprise there.
