Knights of Columbus member and Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth is leading the move to re-criminalize abortion in Canada.

There are historical antecedents to his deployment of authoritarian tactics to achieve this goal.

In the January 16, 2012 issue of The New Yorker, Adam Gopnik reviewed and compared recent publications that address the role of the Spanish Inquisition. Of particular interest to me was the consensus among a number of well regarded contemporary historians that this institution provided a template for a number of similar endeavours.

Woodworth’s “debate” can be summed up thusly: The fathers of the Catholic Church - who dictate dogma du jour - have a centuries-long rage that their God invested the power of creating human life within the body of women.

The arcane doctrines that they’ve crafted obscures the fact that women are more than brooding chickens.

Woodworth and his “pro-life” colleagues are attempted to subvert government, the legal system and the public health care system to institutionalize their religious beliefs.

Canadians who are opposed to the fundamentalist Christianization of our tax-supported institutions have to speak up, now.
