CSIS and the ugly girls

A friend writes,

This story touches on a big ugly fact that was never fully vetted in either the O’Connor or Iacobucci Inquiries:

There is no doubt that CSIS was happy to co-operate with foreign intelligence agencies from the most heinous regimes around the world, often to the detriment of human rights generally, and the rights of some Canadians specifically. As the saying sometime goes, there is only one intelligence agency in the world. The ideology behind all intelligence agencies is maintaining the status quo of the current ruling elites, whomever they may be in a particular country. That single ideology trumps everything else, including respect for democracy, human rights, etc.

In this we can see, perhaps, the reason why the Paraguayan wing of the Harper government has been so eager to legitimize torture.

In any case, here’s the rationale for propping up Muammar al-Gaddafi, from the horse’s mouth:

Following his retirement in 2007, [William “Jack” Hooper] the CSIS No. 2 told the Toronto Star that Canada’s spy service has no choice but to team up with some unsavoury foreign counterparts to protect Canada from terrorism. “Here’s the deal. Everybody would like to believe that we have an array of choices that are good choices and bad choices,” he said. “But we’re going to a dance where every girl is ugly, okay - they’re all ugly. And all we can do is get the least ugly girl to dance with.”

Charming. I wonder what it’s like to be a female employee of CSIS?
