For very many people in the world, the choice between having modern consumption goods for them and their children and having their great-grandchildren survive is a clear one: better to have luxury now. The enormous armies of the poor of the world don’t live in some kind of indigenist pastoral paradise: on-going misery is their lot, and “save the Earth for future generations” is not going to hold much water. Consequently any form of environmentalism that doesn’t factor in a massive increase in consumption overall is DOA. That such a thing may be impossible doesn’t mean it isn’t true. Better start working on those technological fixes.
